A new 32 feet wide amphitheater flanked by a classroom on either side. A rear deck runs the length of the structure and looks out over adjoining conservation land. The deck functions as a breakout space for the other program areas, or independently as a quiet perch in the woods. The wall of gapped boards between deck and stage functions as a perforated screen, reminding an audience that nature is not far away, but offering enough separation for backstage or recreational uses. Sited along the edge of the main lawn of the Greater Boston JCC where it faces the main building and adds a third wall around the lawn’s perimeter. The design team chose wood to harmonize with the adjacent woodlands and offer the owner a low maintenance, naturally weathering exterior. Interior classroom walls are exposed Douglas Fir studs revealing the reverse of the cedar shiplap siding.
